Experience of a Lifetime

Team BC athletes and coaches represent the best in B.C.

In the years leading to the Games, B.C.’s finest young athletes are chosen by their Provincial Sport Organization using selection criteria and competition playdowns. As the best in their respective age groups, these competitors come to the Games having trained long hours to be among those chosen to represent their respective province or territory.

Set up for Success

Team BC and its partners provide performance planning and science/medicine support services (such as functional screening, strength and conditioning, mental training, nutrition and drug education) to round out an athlete’s preparation to compete, challenge coaches to create optimal training and competition environments and train mission staff with skills and knowledge to support Team BC athletes and coaches prior to and at the Games.

Representing Your Province

For many athletes and coaches, the chance to represent British Columbia at the Canada Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. That opportunity also comes with expectations to represent your province with positivity, respect, and inclusivity.

Athletes are selected through a team selection process determined by their Provincial Sport Organization (PSO). In order to be selected to Team BC, the athlete must have met all eligibility criteria in the Sport Technical Package and be fully registered for the Games through the Canada Games registration system.

To be selected to the Games, athletes are expected to:

    • Be a member in good standing with your PSO.
    • Participate fully in Team training programs.
    • Train and compete to the best of your ability and in the spirit of fair play.
    • Familiarize yourself with, and abide by, the Team BC Code of Conduct and Policies manual.
    • Fully register and sign the waiver forms.
    • Reside in the Athlete’s Village at the Games.
    • Represent your sport and the Province of BC with respect.

Coaches and Managers are selected by the Provincial Sport Organizations to coach the provincial teams competing for Team BC at the Games. Coaching staff are responsible for supervising their athletes prior to and at the event, including on travel to and from the Games.

To be selected for the Canada Games, coaches and managers must:

    • Be a member in good standing with your PSO.
    • Coach and manage in the spirit of fair play.
    • Oversee Team preparation, performance and conduct of competitors prior to and at the Games.
    • Ensure that the athletes are aware of important Team BC information and policies.
    • Take care of all administrative matters and adhere to Team BC deadlines for information.
    • Reside in the Athletes Village.
    • Ensure that the athletes have read the Team BC Guide to the Games and understand all Code of Conduct and Policy matters. The Head Coach is involved in discipline hearings for minor infractions, in accordance with the guidelines for sanctions outlined in the Team BC code of conduct and policies and the Provincial Sport Organization policies.
    • Attend Team BC functions and ceremonies as required.
    • Liaise with Mission Staff prior to and during the Games and become familiar with roles and responsibilities.
    • Be the conduit of information between the team and Team BC, communicating regularly with the Mission Staff and leadership team as required.
    • Ensure all team members are fully registered for the Games including submitting the signed waiver forms.

Arriving Ready to Compete

Mental Performance Consultants

Mental Performance Consultants (MPC) are qualified professionals who work with Provincial Sport Organizations (PSO) to incorporate mental training support before and during the Canada Games.

The goal of the MPC program is to develop a system that consistently creates ideal environments for teams and athletes to perform at their best. MPCs provide support by assisting coaching staff, working with team dynamics, and providing meaningful support to individual athletes.

The performance program is made possible through partnership with the BC Games Society, Canadian Sport Institute – Pacific, viaSport, and SportMedBC.
