Triathletes selected to Team BC for Canada Summer Games

A journey that started six months ago with over 75 long-listed athletes came to a crescendo last weekend, with Camp 3 Time Trials and the North Shore Draft Legal Super Sprint Triathlon. The Final 15 short-listed athletes battled to earn an opportunity to represent British Columbia at the 2017 Canada Games.

As the dust settled, three male and three female athletes, each between 16 and 19 years of age, were selected to Team BC, each of whom will go on to compete in three separate events; Individual Triathlon, Team Relay and the Mixed Team Relay, accumulating points (men and women will be ranked together) from all events to provide the final Provincial/Territorial team Games ranking.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the following individuals to the 2017 Canada Summer Games Team:

Prior to the Games, many of the athletes will fine-tune their fitness at the National Championships (Ottawa) and the Provincial Junior Championships, June 24th, round two of the Provincial Youth & Junior Super Series.

“We have an exceptionally talented group of athletes that are committed to doing their best this summer,” said Provincial Coach, Kelly Guest. “We look forward to showcasing our emerging athletes in Manitoba, and to climbing atop the podium at the Games.”

“It’s been an exhaustive process for the athletes, performing on demand against BC’s best young racers on three separate occasions,” said Laura Medcalf, Team BC Assistant Coach and Manager. “The Team we have assembled is very well rounded, and capable of top results in each of the Games’ events.”

“Congratulations to all athletes, those that went through the rigours of each selection camp, and those that were ultimately awarded to represent our province, well done.  The dedication and focus each of these talented athletes brings to our sport is truly inspiring,” said Duncan Wood, Chair, Triathlon BC.

Team BC athletes will compete during the first week of the Games (July 28 to August 6), against 60 of Canada’s best young competitors.  The 2017 Canada Summer Games, this country’s largest multi-sport event for young athletes, will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and feature over 4,000 athletes from 19 different sports, attracting over 20,000 spectators over the duration of the Games.
