Thundering bronze medal win for beach volleyball women

The women’s beach volleyball team of Darby Dunn (Langley) and Quincy Birker (Kelowna) squared off for bronze against Team Nova Scotia on the last day of competition in week one at the Canada Summer Games.

Birker and Dunn had started their warm-up for the game but, thunderstorms brewed overhead and the match was delayed for 30 minutes.  The girls took the opportunity to relax and played cards while they waited for the storm to pass.

When they hit the court they were ready and went on a 7-0 run to start and then took the first set 21-10.  The second set was equally dominant and they took the win 21-14.

“It has been great getting to connect with people in your sport but people in your province and in other provinces and other sports.  On our first day at the Games we didn’t know what to do so we just went outside in the village with our guys team and grabbed a volleyball and we had divers from BC join us, basketball players from Ontario, track girls from Quebec.  It has been a great experience getting to know people from all over.”
