Tennis players heat up the court
It’s getting hotter at tennis in more ways than one. The temperature on the court reached over 30 C. The competition also took a step up as the two undefeated teams (BC and Alberta) matched up in the afternoon draw.
Michael Chu (South Surrey) a 13 year old playing in the Men’s singles is hoping to do well. “We have a really good chance to beat them and win gold as a team”.
Aaron Diemer the normal men’s number two is recovering from an injury and playing doubles with Calvin Thalheimer (Kelowna). “Michael has filled in and done very well. Alberta is a tough team and we will have extremely competitive matches”, said Tennis manager Nicole McLennan (North Vancouver).
The team swept Manitoba in the morning matches. In the afternoon, Michael was down a set (6-1) and came back to win the second (6-3) in a gutsy comeback performance unfortunately losing in a tie breaker. Jessie Gong (Richmod) won her match 2 sets to none. Jerry Huang also came back from 1-0 down to tie and eventually lose in the tie breaker. Sasha Gorchanyuk lost her match in a tie breaker as well. both me s and women’s doubles teams came through with wins to force a mixed doubles game to decide the gold medal. Jerry Huang (Port Moody) and Sasha Vagramov (Port Moody) won in straight sets for the win.
Better than the games was the way the players supported each other throughout the tournament whether they won or lost. They showed tremendous character in the heat of battle which will help them as they progress in their tennis careers.
