Coach Conversation: Team bronze for BC in badminton is first in more than a decade
A week of tough competition for BC in badminton ended on a high note with a bronze medal in the team event – the first team medal in that event for BC since the 2011 Games.
That means every BC badminton athlete at the PEI Games returns home with a medal.
“It’s very exciting,” says Coach Phyllis Chan (Vancouver). “Our athletes were a little unfortunate in the individual events, so we were looking forward to the team event because everyone gets a medal. It was a huge team effort to get here.”
BC was seeded fourth coming into the event, which was dominated by a strong Ontario team.
“We got to third, so we improved from the last time,” adds Chan. “Every time we medal at these events, it increases awareness for the next generation, so the Canada Winter Games are very important for our athletes.”
PEI was Chan’s third time as a coach at the Canada Games after representing BC twice in the sport as an athlete. She has also competed for Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
She says the multisport games experience is so valuable for young athletes.
“I always think that they don’t really realize how big of an event it is until they get there. When they hear the crowds cheering, then it gets into their head that it is actually a big deal.”
Gurbaksh Saini (Surrey) and Jadon Kai Hay Tsang (Burnaby) won bronze for BC in the doubles male event.
