Team BC makes badminton quarterfinals

The badminton individual competition kicked off today at the 2015 Canada Winter Games. The first few rounds of bracket play decided the quarterfinalists of each of the five disciplines, and Team BC has great representation in the the upcoming round:

Women’s singles: Qingzi Ouyang (Vancouver)
Men’s singles: James Ho (Surrey) and Joshua Liu (Vancouver)
Women’s doubles: Kylie Cheng (Vancouver)/Ouyang
Men’s doubles: Liu/Duncan Yao (Richmond)
Mixed doubles: Ho/Samantha Zheng (Vancouver) and Yao/Cheng

Ho played a tight three-set match against Ontario’s Sergiy Shatenk to secure his spot in the quarters. “Winning and losing is one measure of success, but being able to improve on the court as the match goes on is another accomplishment,” said Ho. “So far, I’ve been able to improve each game here at the Canada Winter Games.”

Ho wasn’t the only one pleased with his performance. “James played very well today; he had great shot selection to come from behind and win,” said head coach, Abdul Shaikh (Vancouver).

The individual competition continues today in each discipline.
