It was a busy day of judo today out at the Charles Jago Sport Centre as the teams took in their first full day of competition. Team BC had entries in each of the seven weight classes featured today and advanced three of their team to medal contention.
Leo Goldberg (Langley) took home the bronze medal in the -60kg weight class, while both Ario Nishimura (Richmond) and local, hometown favourite, Lavanna Laass (Prince George), took home silver in their respective -73kg and -63kg weight classes after losing close matches in the finals.
“I felt I was going well,” recounted Laass about her championship bout with Hana Varsanyi of Team Alberta, “but she got me into a submission hold and I just couldn’t break it.”
Nishimura lost to tough Team Ontario competitor, Brad Langlois, in another close match to take his silver medal.
Team BC men’s 73-81kg, 81-90kg, 90-100kg, and +100kg weight classes and women’s 63-70kg, 70-78kg, and +78kg weight classes competed at 1 p.m. at the Charles Jago Sport Centre. Finals will start at 5 p.m. at the same venue.
