Team BC is second in the medal count after week one
The first week competition at the 2017 Canada Summer Games finished up Friday in Winnipeg.
Team BC is sitting in second place in the medal standings with 26 gold medals, 26 silver medals, and nine bronze medals for a total of 61. Team Ontario is in first with 90 medals and Team Quebec is in third with 51.
Highlights of the week:
- 28 medals in Athletics (compared to 21 at the 2013 Canada Summer Games) including 14 gold, 11 silver, and 3 bronze
- Six medals in Triathlon including three gold medals for Desirae Ridenour (Cowichan Bay)
- 14 medals for rowing with a medal in every event for a total of five gold, eight silver, and one bronze
- Six medals in diving with Victoria’s Bryden Hattie leading the way with three silvers
- Three medals in mountain bike including gold for the men’s relay team of Squamish athletes Holden Jones, Rhys Verner and Sean Fincham. Verner also won gold in the sprint race.
- Beach Volleyball gold for the men’s team (Isaac Bevis and Jeff Webb – Nanaimo) and bronze for the women’s team (Quincy Birker-Kelowna and Darby Dunn-Langley)
- Sailing silver in the single handed laser for John Owen (Victoria) and bronze in the double handed 29er
- Fourth place finish for Men’s Basketball
- Fifth place finish for Baseball and Women’s Soccer
- Eight place finish for Women’s Basketball and Ninth place for Men’s Softball

Saturday is “turn-around day” with week one sports heading home and week two sports arriving.
Competition will resume on Monday, August 7 with Canoe Kayak, Road Cycling, Golf, Men’s Soccer, Women’s Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Indoor Volleyball (Men and Women) and Wrestling.
