Team BC faces Team Saskatchewan in a nail biter of a hockey match up

By Tania Kenny, Team BC Mission Staff

Team Saskatchewan opened the scoring six minutes into the first.  At the 11-minute mark of the first period, Team BC forward Sarah Potomak (Aldergrove) sniped a top shelf goal, following a tick-tac-toe play with assists from Leona Sim (North Vancouver) and Natalie Stanwood (West Vancouver).  However, Team Saskatchewan didn’t back down and with eight minutes left in the first they tucked away a second goal to take the lead.

Team BC was able to tie it up again with a goal by Maegan Beres (Lions Bay), assisted by Potomak, at 13:10 in the second.  Saskatchewan came back with another goal and Team BC finished the second period down 3-2.

Forty-five seconds into the third, Team BC opened with a goal from Potomak.  Thankfully, Morgan Skinner (Victoria) kept the game tied with a great blocker save.  Tensions ran high when Amy Potomak (Aldergrove) was pulled down by three players, with no call.  Potomak (Sarah) would retaliate with a breakaway.

Team BC out shot Team Saskatchewan in the third 10-4.  In the five-minute, four-on-four overtime Team BC was all over Team Saskatchewan and even had a man advantage for the last minute and 30.  Unfortunately, they weren’t able to put the puck away and onto shoot outs it went.

Team BC’s Potomak (Sarah) was the first to shoot; however, she hit the post.  Team Saskatchewan was able to put one away to take the game 4-3.

When asked about the game, head coach Sylvain Leone said, “I thought the girls did everything we asked.  Saskatchewan scored three goals off of face of plays but I thought we carried the play in all other phases of the game. The girls should be proud but we have more tournament left – we’re not done yet.”

Alternate captain Shannon Morris-Reade (Port Coquitlam) said, “we earned our right to play on the ice and it’s hard to loose in a shout out, but we’re proud of how far we’ve come.”
