Team BC and Mi KIDS Partner at 2015 Western Canada Summer Games

Team BC and Mi KIDS Fort McMurray have forged a partnership to provide children in Fort McMurray with access to sport. During the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, Team BC will provide a cash donation to Mi KIDS whose mission is to ensure financial assistance to Wood Buffalo youth and families that face barriers to participation in sport, recreation, social and cultural programs and activities.

“This is a great legacy project for the members of Team BC while they take part in the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games!  Helping children access sports in other communities is a life lesson that you cannot put a price on,” said Coralee Oakes, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

Team BC strives to inspire exceptional experiences and personal development through sport.  It all starts with an introduction to sport at a young age.  Team BC athletes have been asked to reflect on how they were first introduced to their sport and invest a twoonie to provide access to sport for youth in Wood Buffalo, Alberta.

“Team BC will pay it forward in Wood Buffalo,” said Team BC Chef de Mission Diane St. Denis. “We hope to inspire kids to try a sport by eliminating the cost barriers and ultimately encourage youth to be active for life!”

Leaving a legacy in the communities in which they compete has been a long standing tradition for Team BC.  Initiated in 2011, Team BC identifies a way to give back to the host community at the Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Games.

“We are delighted to accept this donation to the Mi KIDS program,” said Annette Antoniak, Chief Executive Officer of the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo, operators of recreation facilities in the Wood Buffalo region and the Mi KIDS program. “Thanks to Team BC and this legacy gift we will have the opportunity to assist more children in our communities to access sport, recreation, social and cultural programs, fostering their development and encouraging their growth as both athletes and citizens.”
