Team BC alumni feature in 16 medals from Pan Am Games
Mo Zhang (Richmond) won a gold medal at the recent Pan American Games in Lima, Peru in table tennis mixed doubles. Zhang competed for Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games and is also a BC Games alumni competing in the 2004 BC Winter Games. Zhang’s medal is one of 16 contributed by Team BC alumni.
Gymnast Shallon Olsen (Surrey) contributed two medals: a silver in the team event and a bronze in vault. Olsen competed for Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games where she was the closing ceremony flag bearer.
Triathletes Hannah Henry (Victoria) and Desirae Ridenour (Cowichan Bay) made history in Lima as they won the silver medal in the mixed relay, the first time this discipline was competed in a Pan American Games.
Just over a year ago, softball ace Sara Groenewegen (White Rock) was in a medically induced coma diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease. She came back as a force pitching a perfect game against Venezuela at the Games striking out 10 batters in five innings. Softball left the Games with a silver medal. Groenewegen competed for Team BC at the 2011 Canada Summer Games.
