Record setting performance for Team BC
The 2017 Canada Summer Games have come to a close with a record setting performance for Team BC with 146 medals – the most ever earned by British Columbia at a Canada Summer Games. Team BC finished in second place in the medal count behind Team Ontario with 212 medals and ahead of Team Quebec with 138 medals.
The last medal of the Games was the one that broke Team BC’s previous record of 145 medals and was a gold won by the women’s softball team on Sunday just prior to the Closing Ceremony. This medal was also a fourth consecutive gold medal for Team BC women’s softball at the Canada Summer Games.
Week 2 Results Highlights:
Swimming earned 52 medals – 17 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze
– Tyler Wall (Penticton) lead the way with nine medals – four gold, two silver, three bronze
– Raben Dommann of North Vancouver with eight medals including five gold in the 4x200m relay, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m.
– Jesse Shade (Campbell River) with five gold in Special Olympics Swimming and two Canada Games records
– Acacia Benn (Penticton) won five medals including a gold in the 200m backstroke, silver in the 200m medley and 5000m open water, as well as two silvers in relays.
– Arianna Hunsicker (Surrey) with a silver and four bronze medals in para swimming
BC Wrestlers won 15 medals with the women taking team gold as well as 7 individual gold medals.
Golf men and women each won silver in the team competition and Alicia Lau (Richmond) won silver and Tristan Mandur (Mill Bay) won bronze in individual play.
Eight BC tennis players combined for a team silver and the men’s and women’s doubles teams each took bronze.
Alex Brent (Dewdney) won two bronze in kayaking and 14 year old Cassidy McPherson (Maple Ridge) won an unexpected gold in the K1 5000m.
Cyclist Gillian Ellsay (Courtenay) won gold in the time trial and the criterium and Jay Lamoureux (Victoria) won bronze in the time trial and road race.
Softball won their fourth consecutive Canada Summer Games gold medal against Team Alberta.

After two amazing weeks of celebrating excellence in sport, the 2017 Canada Summer Games came to a close with a memorable Closing Ceremony at Investors Group Field. Titled “Grand Summer Party”, the ceremony celebrated both the Canada Games 50th anniversary and Canada 150 while highlighting the natural beauty of the host province and the vibrant culture of the city of Winnipeg.
Team BC athletes sang along to performances by Fred Penner and Brett Kissel, and celebrated as our women’s softball team was awarded their gold medals by the Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable David Johnston.
North Vancouver’s Raben Dommann carried the British Columbia flag into the Closing Ceremony of the 2017 Canada Games today, proudly representing his sport, his province and his fellow athletes.
“I’m just thankful that I was chosen by Team BC and that the swim team supported me.” Dommann said moments before parading into the Closing Ceremony, “I’m really proud to be from BC so this is really exciting for me.”
The 16-year-old swimmer powered his way to eight medals over the past week at the Canada Games and proved himself a tremendous leader within the team, always willing to step in any role required.
