Parents and families provide support for Team BC at the 2017 Canada Summer Games

Parents from all over the province have travelled to Winnipeg to join Team BC’s Cheer Squad.

“It’s fabulous,” said Christina Silveri of Burnaby. “We’re having such a great time. We’ve met lots of people and it’s wonderful.”
Silveri joined other parents at Team BC’s Cheer Squad breakfast and commented on what it’s like to see her daughter Amanda compete in wrestling. “I’m always nervous. I know she knows what she’s doing and she’s good at what she does. But, it’s just a mum thing.”

“It’s exciting and it’s been enjoyable” said Trina O’Hea of North Vancouver, who is in Winnipeg to support her son Devin in the men’s soccer tournament.

Nick Ardanaz of Delta is in Winnipeg to watch his son Teo, a member of the men’s volleyball team. “We’ve done lots of tournaments just for the sport,” he said. “But here, it’s kind of cool because you see athletes from other events. As a parent, you are always nervous for your son and for the team when you are watching, but you feel the support from other parents in other sports.”

“It’s so nice for us to get all of our fans together in one room and thank them, because they are part of our athletes’ journey on day one,” said Tyla Flexman (Vancouver), Team BC’s special events coordinator. “I think it’s really important because parents put in the commitment to Team BC. They are the ones that are the foundation of our athletes’ success and keeping our athletes engaged in sport. This is our small way of thanking them for all they do for Team BC.”

Flexman added it’s great for parents to meet each other and enjoy the multisport experience at the Canada Games. “We are a Team BC family.”
