Outstanding QC Volunteer Makes a Difference with BC Sailor
The Canada Summer Games always showcase the best in outstanding sport performance. Beyond athletic prowess however, the Games also see outstanding performances from selfless volunteers who go above and beyond, offering their time, expertise and, in this case their culinary skills, to support the country’s finest young athletes in achieving their goals.
Chantal Audet is one such volunteer. Stationed at Lac Magog as a health volunteer for sailing, Chantal was always there with a smile and a helping hand, ready to intervene should sailors get injured on the water.
At 16 years old, Vancouver’s Lloyd Lyall is among the youngest athletes representing BC in sailing. In fact, he had to request special permission to compete in these Games as he was under the minimum age requirement. Having won gold at the 2011 Canadian Western Championships, the young skipper showed immense potential and came in wanting to have fun and sail to the best of his ability.
For any athlete, nutrition is a key component of performance. The right food, at the right time is essential to ensure maximum performance potential. As a diabetic, nutrition is doubly crucial to Lloyd’s success on the field of play and his ability to achieve his highest potential.
With the sailing venue located some distance from the athletes’ village, it was difficult for Lloyd to have access to the foods he needed to fuel his day. When Chantal Audet heard about this, she didn’t hesitate to step up.
As a local resident, Chantal’s house was not too far from the venue and so she took it upon herself to make sure Lloyd got what he needed to compete. Every morning, Chantal put together balanced lunches for Lloyd, including hard-boiled eggs and cheese which she had purchased herself.
Out of the goodness of her heart, Chantal rose to the occasion and made sure the young sailor had what he needed. Lloyd ended up winning a silver medal for BC in the Men’s Double Handed 29er event and our favourite sailing volunteer was there to see him climb the podium.
Team BC wants to thank Chantal Audet for all that she has done for its sailors over the first week of competition. Merci Chantal!!!
