MISSION STAFF MONDAY – Sarah Kiengersky
Sarah cannot recall a time that sport has not been at the forefront of her life. It was a value and passion her family instilled in her from a young age. This was only made stronger throughout her years of involvement in many sports including soccer, karate, golf, curling, and hockey, just to name a few. The love she has for sport has fuelled many big decisions in her life, inclusive of her education and career choices.
Another rookie to Team BC this year – Sarah has many valuable characteristics that will ensure Team BC is successful in Red Deer.
Favourite Quote: “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire” – Jennifer Lee (smiley face emoji!)
If you could win an Olympic medal for any sport, real or fake, what would it be?
Without a doubt, I’d choose hockey. (It’s a great choice – we do love winning hockey medals around here!)
What is your most used emoji?
The smiley face, I keep my emoji game pretty simple. (with so many choices… the smile still wins out!)
Fast Facts:
- Favourite Colour – It changes between Green and Purple
- Favourite Food – Stir Fry is a delicious, healthy and easy go to meal for me (This answer was made for me – Stir Fry = fav)
- Favourite Sports Team – Vancouver Canucks (Go Nucks!)
- Nickname – I have a lot… Sare is a common one, and in sport people used to call me ‘Jersky’ (This is our first responder with MULTIPLE nicknames.. love it!)
When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?
Some of the favourites include camping, exploring new places, watching and playing different sports, and catching up with family and friends. (is it just me, or does it seem like Sarah has literally no free time… see below)
Sarah has completed a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree, both with a focus in the area of Sport Psychology. Shortly after completing her Master’s Degree at UBC in 2015, Sarah moved into an Athlete Coach Services role with Canadian Sport Institute Pacific. Here, her responsibilities include ensuring that athletes and coaches are connected to the services and resources that are available to them, assisting Provincial Sport Organizations with the development of high-performance criteria and nominations, as well as leading the Athlete Coach Services partnerships. In this role, Sarah has gained a wealth of knowledge about the Canadian and Provincial sport landscapes, and is excited to expand her knowledge as she supports Team BC athletes and coaches in her role as Sport Mission Staff at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.
Why did you join Team BC Mission Staff?
I really enjoy working with athletes and coaches and being surrounded by sport. I wanted to support athletes and coaches in such a tremendous milestone, and help make their Games experience one they won’t soon forget. (PREACH!)
What’s the best Halloween costume you’ve ever had?
I once dressed up as a bag of jelly beans and won best costume at my school’s costume parade, so it probably goes down in history as my best. (this is legendary for sure)
What advice do you have for Team BC athletes heading to Red Deer?
Embrace and enjoy every second and opportunity of your experience (I might be biased, but Team BC Mission Staff give the best advice)
Sarah – thank you for sharing some of your “spare” time with us and for joining Team BC. We’re all in with you and your smiley faces :)
