Mission Staff Monday – Robyn Hughes

Robyn is another FIRST TIME Team BC Mission Staffer. This is a trend! But have no fear, she is totally qualified and skilled and will be a huge asset in Red Deer. Representing Freestyle and Gymnastics Trampoline on the sport staff, Robyn is uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact on the athletes and coaches she meets on this journey. She has the innate desire to support others using her planning skills and can-do attitude.

“In sport, as in life, the pursuit of a dream is a journey of transformation.”

Why did you join Team BC Mission Staff?

I love furthering my experiences in sport, especially at such a high level as the Canada Games, and also being part of a team that is making an impact and giving back to their community.

Originally from Victoria, now a Vancouverite, Robyn has a passion for events and brings an understanding of hosting large-scale sporting events and background working with a variety of different sport organizations. Robyn is currently the Coordinator at Richmond Sport Hosting, where she supports sport event organizers host world-class events in the city by connecting them with venues, accommodations and other local attractions and organizations.

When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?

Running on the seawall, hiking the Grouse Grind, recipe experimenting, or spending quality time binging on Netflix documentaries with my boyfriend. (this is all VERY VANCOUVER and I like it)

And for my favourite part, what is your nickname?

Bob. My closest friends have called me this for years. (LOVE THAT)

Fast Facts about Robyn:

  • Favourite Colour: Pink
  • Favourite Food: Do Reeces Pieces count? Real food would have to be pizza. (for sure they count and yum now I want pizza)
  • Favourite Sports Team: Vancouver Canucks – maybe I am biased since I worked for them. (be biased girl! Do your thing!)
  • Most used emoji: the crying laughing face (relatable)

Gaining a foundation of understanding for the provincial sport sector in her previous role at viaSport, Robyn seeks out opportunities to contribute in the community. She has gained valuable experience working for an array of sport organizations from grassroots to professional sports teams, including the Vancouver Canucks, Vancouver Nighthawks, Vancouver Riptide and the Victoria Goddess Run. A promoter for sport for life, Robyn runs recreationally (although very competitively against herself) and is a spin-enthusiast. She is an advocate that sport and recreation are vital to healthy-living and development and believes that sport has a unique quality to inspire and strengthen communities.

If you could win an Olympic medal for any sport, real or fake, what would it be?

Laser tag (totally epic)

What movie or TV show title best describes your week?

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (and spaghetti I hope!)

What advice do you have for Team BC athletes heading to Red Deer?

Compete against yourself, don’t worry about other athletes. You do you. (PREACH)

What do you take the most pictures of (what is your phone’s camera roll dominated by)?

Recipes I want to cook, or inspirational quotes. (Okay, on the recipes front… this is my life. I need to get cooking!)

Robyn is a delight to work with and we are all so pleased she is on the team for Red Deer. Stay warm my friend, the Alberta Grouse Grind is surely covered in snow, but I will come with you! (reading back on this comment, I don’t think I am going to come – brrr!)
