Mission Staff Monday – Judy Joseph-Black
Judy, or JJB as she is formally referred to as, is the Communications Manager for Team BC Mission Staff heading in to Red Deer next month. That makes her… you guessed it – my boss! So, we will keep the chirping to a respectful minimum.
One may wonder – how many games has Judy been a part of? We are not even sure she knows the real answer!
Why did you join Team BC Mission Staff?
I’ve done it so many times and it’s one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. Being part of the journey of an Olympian or Paralympian is inspiring.
On the day to day grind, Judy works as an Event Manager for the BC Games. In this role, she assists Host Community Volunteers in the planning, operation and staging of the BC Winter Games. An admitted Games junkie, she was the assistant press chief for Team Canada at the 2012 and 2008 Paralympic Games, media attaché for the 2000, 2002 and 2004 Paralympic Games and Team BC communications manager for several Canada Games and Western Canada Summer Games.
Fast Facts about JJB:
- Favourite Colour: Green (same question, like money or?)
- Favourite Food: West Indian (specific…)
- Favourite Sports Team: Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team (CLASSIC!)
- Nickname: Joker
- Most used emoji: Brown thumbs up
Before joining the Events team at BC Games, Judy was recently a sport consultant with the Provincial Government in British Columbia. She has also held roles including manager for the national women’s soccer team and owner at her own sport communications company.
Does someone with so much event experience have free time? Away from work, Judy runs a weekend B&B with her husband on Gabriola Island and enjoys playing rounds of golf with her old soccer cronies throughout the spring and summer.
When you’re not working, how do you spend your free time?
Golfing, gardening, and walking an imaginary dog – because I want a real one again! (TREAT YOURSELF)

What advice do you have for Team BC athletes heading to Red Deer?

If you could win an Olympic medal in any sport, real or fake, what would it be?
It would be a Paralympic medal for motorcycle racing (this is a good one!)
Thank you for your leadership and expertise Judy, we (I) are lucky to have you!!
