Judo Athletes Selected to Represent BC
This past weekend, Judo BC hosted the Canada Games Trials at St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary in Abbotsford, BC. This competition determined those athletes who will go on to compete at the Canada Games next February in Red Deer, Alberta.
The Canada Games are held every two years, alternating between winter and summer and are a key step in the development of Canada’s amateur athletes. Team BC will send 340 athletes, coaches, support staff, and Mission Staff to the Games which take place in Red Deer, Alberta February 15 to March 3. In 2019, the Judo event will take place during week two of the Games.
In 2015, BC women ranked 4th in the country the men ranked 3rd. Canada Winter Games Alumni Gabby DeSousa and Layton Keely will be attending the 2019 Games as BC coaches. DeSousa competed in the 2011 Games and Keely won silver in the 2007 games. Judo BC wishes all the best to the athletes competing at the event this year.

“Last weekend at John Brebeuf High School we saw some very interesting fights. We saw no big surprise in the selected people. We have been preparing for the Canada Winter Games for two years now. Of our 14 athletes, 11 medalled at the last national championships, including four gold. The goal of Judo BC at these games is an ambitious one of placing 1st both in individual medals but also as a Team. Now that the team members are selected we will begin that final preparation phase which includes training camps and national level competitions in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec.” Judo BC Sport Development Director and Head Coach, Jeremy Le Bris
