Garceau and Toth medal in squash individual competitions

By Ashley McMullin, Team BC Mission Staff

Yesterday was the final day of the individual competition for squash, ending with a gold medal for Michele Garceau (Surrey) and a bronze medal for Matthew Toth (Richmond).

Garceau’s match against Team Ontario’s Madlen O’Connor, an opponent she had faced many times, went to four games.  After losing the first game, Garceau came back strong to win the next three.  “We’ve played against each other a lot, so I felt really confident going into the match,” Garceau said.  “Even after losing the first game, I knew I could fight back if I focused on each point.”

The other exciting match last night pitted Team BC’s own Toth against Gavin Maxwell (Victoria) for the bronze medal.  The two traded games with Toth winning the first and third.  Maxwell won the second and, though down in the fourth, rallied to come from behind to win and force the match into a fifth game.  Toth went up early in the fifth and held onto the lead to win the bronze medal.

Team BC also competed in the team competition on Tuesday where both women and men remain undefeated in pool play.  Last night, the men and women took on Team Alberta to determine the final placing in their respective pool.
