Release from Rowing Canada
On June 2, The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Rowing Canada Aviron announced the 26 National Rowing Team athletes who have been nominated to represent Canada at the TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games this summer from July 10 to 26. The rowing regatta will take place on the Royal Canadian Henley course in St. Catharines, Ontario, from July 11 to 15.

The Pan Am Games regatta will mark the first time in 16 years that an international rowing competition has taken place in Canada. The last time this occurred was at the 1999 World Rowing Championships, which also took place on the Royal Canadian Henley course.

“Canada has long been a world power in rowing, and I am certain this reputation will continue to grow at the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games. Congratulations to the athletes named to the Canadian rowing team, who will compete at the recently upgraded, historic Royal Canadian Henley course in St. Catharines during the Year of Sport in Canada.” said The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport).

The National Rowing Team has a busy summer ahead of them. In addition to the Pan Am Games regatta, the team will be competing at World Rowing Cup races in Europe in preparation for the all-important World Rowing Championships in France at the end of the summer, which will serve as the primary Olympic qualifying competition for Rio 2016.

“We are looking forward to this great and rare opportunity to compete on home water,” said Peter Cookson, High Performance Director for Rowing Canada Aviron. “We will be fielding a strong team in all 14 boat classes as we use this regatta as part of our preparation for next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.”
