Daily Recap – August 20, 2022

Team BC brought home a total of 21 medals, including a Gold medal in Road Cycling and three Gold medals in Golf, on Day 15 of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, which brings BC’s total medal count to 118.

Day 15 Highlights: 

• Team BC captured medals in Athletics, Road Cycling, Golf, Rowing, and Sailing on Saturday
• BC broke a Canada Games record in female Individual Golf and won a total of four medals (three gold and one silver).
• Four diving athletes from BC secured a spot in their medal rounds.
• BC’s men’s Box Lacrosse team qualified for the Gold medal game on Sunday

Athletics

The last day of Athletics rolled out under a scorching sun at Canada Games Park. Team BC added seven medals to their count, including Leo Sammarelli (T54) (Vancouver) picking up his third medal of the Games; a Silver in the men’s 400m Para. That gives Leo a full set, joining his 100m Bronze and his Gold from the 1500m.

Team BC also added Bronze medals on the field in Men’s Pole Vault, Long Jump, and Women’s Discus, and on the track in the Men’s 200m Special Olympics, the Women’s 800m, and the 4 x 400m relay, which closed out the 2022 Canada Summer Games Athletics competition.

“I am super stoked”, said Mikayla Tinkham (Maple Ridge) after winning her Bronze medal. “[It] took me about 600m to get into the race, but once I was in it, I just gave everything I had down that home stretch.”

“It has been an amazing experience,'' said Tinkham when asked about her overall Games experience.” I have never been part of a [multi-sport Games] like this. It’s been so much fun meeting other athletes from other provinces and other sports as well, everybody has been so great, the volunteers have done an amazing job helping us out, we have been getting free food, taking care of us, so it has been a fantastic experience and a great top off this season.”

“I would have liked to have jumped a little higher, but I’m happy [I came] away with the Bronze medal,” said Isaac Clements after his Bronze medal performance. “Thank you, very much – I couldn’t have done it without you,” said Clements to his friends, family and supporters back home.

Cycling

Team BC captured medals in both the women’s and men’s Road Cycling Criterium on Saturday at Brock University. Lilly Ujfalusi (New Westminster) took home the Gold medal in the women’s race with 26 points, while Evan Russell (Mill Bay) won the Bronze medal in the men’s race with 11 points.

Diving

In the women’s 1m springboard event, three BC athletes, Sadie Howard (North Vancouver), Keira Lu (Victoria), and Michelle McLeod (Spruce Grover, Alberta), qualified for the medal round on Sunday at the Eleanor Misener Aquatics Centre at Brock University.

On the men’s side, Carter Baker (White Rock) qualified for the medal round after finishing the preliminary round with 218.70 points.

Golf

At the Legends on the Niagara golf course, BC brought home four of five possible medals, including three Gold. Tina Jiang (Richmond) secured the Gold medal in the women’s individual event and set a new Canada Games record with a 14 under par finish at these Games. Her teammate Lauren Kim (Surrey) brought home the Silver medal for Team BC, finishing three shots back at 11 under par.

“I just tried to stay in the present and take it one shot at a time,” said Jiang. “It was the most fun I’ve had in a while.”

In the men’s individual event, Cooper Humphreys (Kelowna/Vernon) won the Gold medal after beating Guillaume Paquette of Quebec by 1 stroke after a back and forth tournament.

“I love competition, I love the pressure,” said Humphreys. “I’ve tried experimenting different ways, being too serious, not too serious, I’ve found just being ‘Coop’ is when I’m best.”

In team competition, Team BC came out on top with the Gold medal, ahead of Team Quebec by a whopping 28 strokes, and finishing 33 below par.

“The team is so amazing,” said Jiang. “It was such a great experience.”

Box Lacrosse

BC’s men’s Box Lacrosse team won their semifinal game against Quebec 9-3 at the Canada Games Centre on Saturday, and earned their ticket to the Gold medal game on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Ontario.

"It's exciting definitely to play in this big of an event and play in the final for a chance to win it, it's definitely super cool," said Aidan McDonald. "It's kind of a cool little goal that we've been working up to over the last three years."

McDonald scored four goals for Team BC in the game, while Josh Mills (Maple Ridge) scored three goals.

"I'm glad I could help the team in whatever way that was needed," said McDonald. "We're were kind of just clicking as an offence as one group today so that was nice."

BC came out rolling in the third period after a closing out the second with a two-goal lead, scoring four goals to put the game out of reach.

"Twenty more minutes and we're in the gold medal game," said McDonald on what was said between the second and third periods. "It was kind of just exciting to know that if we just toughed it out for 20 more minutes and kept our cool we would be playing for a gold medal tomorrow."

Rowing

Team BC captured six medals in rowing events on Saturday, including 4 Silvers and 2 Bronze at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course.

Sailing

At the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club, Victoria Coady (Coquitlam) took the Gold medal in the women’s Single Handed Laser Radial with a total of 9 points, after finishing first, second, and first in Saturday’s three races.

Tim Mendham (West Vancouver) finished fifth place in the men’s Single Handed Laser Radial.

Two more races will take place in the women’s Double Handed 29er event on Sunday. BC’s Jessica Hirschbold (Victoria) and Grace Poole (Victoria) are currently in first place after finishing first in three races and second in another race in Saturday’s four races, and currently stand with a total of 15 points, leading Team Nova Scotia by one point.

Colin Gilley (Vancouver) and Matt Young (Vancouver) of Team BC had two first place finishes and two second place finishes in the four races on Saturday in the men’s Double Handed 29er event. This put them in first place position ahead of Team Ontario by four points. Two more races remain on Sunday to wrap up the competition.

Soccer

BC’s women’s soccer team were victorious against Team Manitoba in their qualification match at the Youngs Sportsplex. Melina Glavas (Vancouver) scored a goal at the 34 minute mark, Joy Kimwemwe (Vancouver) scored BC’s second goal at the 47 minute mark, and Jayden Hannesson (Langley) secured the win for Team BC with another goal during stoppage time.

The team will play for fifth place against New Brunswick on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Softball

At the Southward Community Park, the BC men’s softball team dropped their fifth place game against Quebec 10-3, and finished these Games in sixth place.

Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team for BC lost a tough semifinal game versus Manitoba 3 sets to none on Saturday at Canada Games Park. They will play in the Bronze medal game on Sunday at 9 a.m. versus Team Saskatchewan.

On the men’s side, Team BC came out on top against Team New Brunswick 3 sets to 1, and will play in the fifth place game versus Manitoba on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Welland Campus of Niagara College.
