Daily Recap – August 19, 2022

Team BC added 10 medals to its medal count, including one Gold medal in Day 14 of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

Day 14 Highlights: 

• Two days after Lauren Kim broke the Canada Summer Games record for lowest women's single-round score (-5), teammate Tina Jiang broke it again (-6) with a bogey-free round
• Team BC won eight medals in Athletics events on Friday, including one Gold medal in men's high jump
• BC’s Canoe Kayak athletes captured a Silver and Bronze medal
• The BC men’s Box Lacrosse team advanced to the semifinals after a victory over Saskatchewan
• The women’s Volleyball team for BC secured a spot in the semifinals after a shutout win over Quebec

Athletics

BC had a great day in Athletics on Day 14, winning eight medals, including one gold as we approach the last few days of the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

Noel Vanderzee (Lethbridge, Alberta) brought home BC’s 24th Gold of the Games, winning the Men’s High Jump with a jump of 2.12m.

“I felt really comfortable at that height,” said Vanderzee. I was up against amazing competitors; they really pushed me to get that height and get the Gold for BC.”

BC also captured the Silver in the Men’s 4x100m, a surprise to some, but not to the guys.

“We knew we could do well and we executed and won a medal,” said Aidan Turner (Delta).

“We were very confident going into the race,” said Kenny Blackman Jr. (Surrey). “We had a good start and helped transition. We all contributed overall today.”

After the first four events of the women’s Heptathlon, Team BC’s Jorden Hall sits in third place with 3225 points. Teammate Rebecca Dutchak sits ninth with 2751. 

In the men’s 100m wheelchair final, both Team BC athletes set personal bests today. Paulo Guerrero (T53) (Vancouver) finished fifth in a time of 19.21 and Leo Sammarelli (Vancouver) earned his second medal of the Games, taking bronze with a time of 18.73.

Team BC’s Special Olympics athletes all ran the A Final of the 100m today. Jesse Thibeault (Surrey) picked up a Bronze medal in a time of 11.91, with Thomas Rak (Surrey) finishing just off the podium at 11.98. On the women’s side, Olivia Neuman (Cloverdale) ran a time of 14.90 for fourth place, and April Armstrong (Burnaby) finished seventh with a time of 15.67.

Canoe Kayak

Team BC wrapped up Canoe Kayak at the Welland International Flatwater Centre with 2 more medals on Friday.

Cassidy MacPherson (Maple Ridge) took the Silver medal in the women’s K-1 5000m Kayak event with a time of 25:17.000, less than two seconds behind the gold medallist from Nova Scotia. This is MacPherson’s third medal at these Games.

In the women’s C-1 5000m Canoe event, Keisa Bleiler (Vancouver) brought home the Bronze medal for BC. Bleiler has also won a total of three medals at these Games.

Golf

After round 3 of golf on Friday at Legends on the Niagara, Cooper Humphreys (Kelowna/Vernon) is currently tied for first place in the men’s individual event with an overall 9 below par after shooting 5 below par in this round. Ethan Posthumus (Coquitlam) is currently in fourth place after shooting 4 below par on Friday, with an overall 4 below par.

In the women’s individual event, Team BC is in the lead with Tina Jiang (Richmond) tied for first place with teammate Lauren Kim (Surrey) 10 below par overall. Jiang shot 6 below par on Friday, breaking the Canada Games record set by her teammate two days earlier, who shot 1 stroke below par in round 3.

In team competition, BC is dominating the group with an impressive 27 strokes below par, leading Team Ontario in second place by 20 strokes.

Box Lacrosse

Nathan Chalmers (Coquitlam) had 3 goals and an assist, and Arjun Gill (Burnaby) made 36 saves as BC advanced to the semifinals with an 8-5 win over Saskatchewan at Canada Games Park.
“We just needed to keep composed, clean up the small mistakes and fine tune those for the later rounds of the tournament,” said captain Luca Pivetta.
BC broke a 4-4 tie with 2 goals in 38 seconds midway through the third period. They will face Quebec in Saturday’s semifinal game at 2 p.m.

Sailing

In sailing competition at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club, Victoria Coady (Coquitlam) is currently in first place in the women’s Single Handed Laser Radial after 5 of 8 races with a total of 7 points, 6 points ahead of the second placed athlete from Ontario.

In the men’s Single Handed Laser Radial, Tim Mendham (West Vancouver) is now in fourth place just three points behind a medal position after 5 races.

In the women’s Double Handed 29er, the BC pair of Jessica Hirschbold (Victoria) and Grace Poole (Victoria) is in second place just 2 points behind Team Nova Scotia after 5 races.

BC’s Colin Gilley (Vancouver) and Matt Young (Vancouver) are currently in first place in the men’s Double Handed 29er leading Ontario by 2 points after 6 races.

“Today was again light on the sailing courses,” said coach Steve McBride. “The BC sailors continue to be consistently at the top of the races and the standings on Day 2 of racing.”

Softball

At Southward Community Park, Team BC’s men’s softball dropped their opening game of the day in extra innings by a 5-4 margin to Saskatchewan. Brett Alexander (Kelowna) had 3 hits and Dorian Billy (Chase) added a pair in the loss. After taking Saskatchewan to extra innings, BC scored a run in the top of the eighth, but Team Saskatchewan responded to take the win.

In BC’s second game of the day, the team was defeated by Quebec 13-3 in 4 innings.

They will play in the fifth place game versus Quebec on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Volleyball

BC’s women’s volleyball team will advance to the semifinals on Friday after a 3 set to none sweep over Team Quebec at Canada Games Park. They will play the winner of the quarterfinal match between Manitoba and New Brunswick in the semifinal game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

“Volleyball’s a game where the clock doesn’t run out,” said setter, Libby Meldrum. “We take each point as its own, battled our way back and got the win.”

The BC men’s volleyball team lost their quarterfinal game against Quebec 3 sets to 1. They will next play in the consolation match on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. versus the loser of the quarterfinal match between New Brunswick and Ontario.

Team BC Athletics has a treasure chest full of medal opportunities tomorrow, with 25 entries across 17 different medal events. Highlights include Leo Sammarelli (Vancouver) looking for his third wheelchair track medal in the 400m, Jorden Hall (Surrey) in the hunt for a podium finish in Heptathlon, and a chance to end the athletics competition on a high note with both men’s and women’s 4 x 400m relay teams in the A Finals.
