Daily Recap – August 18, 2022
Team BC brought home 5 medals on Thursday on Day 13 of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games to bring the team’s total medal count to 88.

Day 13 Highlights:
- Team BC won medals in Kayak, Road Cycling, and Diving events.
- The entire BC rowing team qualified for their medal heats this weekend.
- The BC men’s softball team won both of their matches and will wrap up their preliminary round on Friday.

Canoe Kayak
Team BC’s Keisa Bleiler (Vancouver) and Veronica So (Vancouver) won the Silver medal in the Women’s Canoe Kayak C2 500m event and a Bronze medal in the 200m event at the Welland International Flatwater Centre.

Cycling
BC’s Isla Walker (Victoria) took the Bronze medal in the women’s Cycling Road Race in the Community of Fonthill in the Town of Pelham on Thursday after finishing with a time of 2:45:20.
On the men’s side, Braden Kersey (Vernon) brought home Bronze for Team BC in the Cycling Road Race with a time of 2:45:20.

Diving
At the Etobicoke Olympium, Team BC’s Michelle McLeod (Spruce Grove, Alberta) secured the Gold medal in the Women’s 3m Springboard Diving event with 279.95 points. This is her second medal of these Games after winning a Silver on the platform on Wednesday.
“Yesterday, [the] platform [was] my board, and I did what I came here to do, so today, I told myself to have fun and I did – it paid off,” said McLeod after her Gold medal dive.

Golf
After two rounds of golf competition at Legends on the Niagara, Lauren Kim (Surrey) is at the top with 9 below par with 135 strokes. Tina Jiang (Richmond) is in second place with 4 below par with 140 strokes, and is leading the third place Ontarian by 3 strokes.
On the men’s side, Cooper Humphreys (Kelowna/Vernon) is tied for third spot with 4 under par with 140 strokes. He shot 5 under par and also hit 9 birdies in Thursday’s round. Ethan Posthumus (Coquitlam) is currently in fifth place with 2 over par with 144 strokes.
"I did a couple of things,” said Humphreys when asked what changes he made in his second day of competition. “My short game was not great yesterday, so I changed how I set up, how I lined up the ball on the green, and I even changed my putter. I wanted to be more aggressive this round and it paid off with those birdies. Basically, I just tried to be more 'Coop'’.”
In team competition, BC is currently first with 16 below par, 10 strokes ahead of Quebec who is in second.

Box Lacrosse
Jared Maznik (Ladner) of Team BC had a goal and two assists in BC’s 3-3 tie with Alberta to finish out the round robin at Canada Games Park. Dorian Connolley (Gibsons) and Luca Pivetta (Victoria) added singles in a tightly contested matchup. Angus Snow (Victoria) made 29 saves.
BC finishes the preliminary round second in their pool with a 1-1-1 record, behind Team Ontario. They will play in the quarterfinal game against Team Saskatchewan on Friday at 2 p.m.

Rowing
At the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course, all of Team BC’s rowers were successful in their pursuit to qualify for the medal heats.
After failing to qualify for the medal heat in the qualification heat in the men’s Single Scull Event, Giancarlo DiPompeo secured a spot in the medal heat after finishing second in repechage with a time of 7:35.97.
In the Women’s Double Sculls event, Team BC directly qualified for the medal heat after finishing first in their qualification heat with a time of 7:39.80.
BC’s men’s Four Rowing team will also head directly to the medal heat after finishing first in their qualification heat with a time of 6:16.17. The women’s Four Rowing team also placed first in their qualification heat with a time of 7:01.06 and qualified for the medal heat on Sunday.
Team BC’s men’s Double Sculls Rowing earned a spot in the medal heat after coming out on top of their qualification heat with a time of 6:43.67.
In the women’s Eight with Coxswain event, BC secured a spot in the medal heat with a second place finish in the qualifiers with a time of 6:39.19.
In the men’s Lightweight Double Sculls event, Team BC made a huge comeback in the repechage with a second place finish with a time of 6:48.85 after coming in last in their qualification heat. They will advance to the medal heat on Sunday.
“Team BC [has] come to the 2022 Canada Summer Games to perform,” said coach Stacy Mitchell. “We have been showing our speed in the last two days to solidify all of our boats in the medal finals. With the potential to medal in all events, I look forward to watching these extraordinary athletes go deep and truly show what they are made of and how fast they can go on the race course.”
BC will be in 14 finals this weekend with a potential to win 14 medals.

Sailing
At the Niagara-on-the-Lake Sailing Club, the BC sailing team competed in Day 2 of sailing action.
In the women’s Single Handed Laser Radial, Victoria Coady (Coquitlam) is leading the group with 4 points after 3 races with two first place finishes on Thursday.
Tim Mendham (West Vancouver) is currently in third place in the men’s Single Handed Laser Radial with 10 points after a first place finish in his third race.
Team BC is currently second in the women’s Double Handed 29er event with 8 points after four races, just behind Team Nova Scotia.
In the men’s Double Handed 29er event, BC is in the gold medal spot after four races with a total of 5 points and leading the second place Ontarians by 3 points.

Soccer
At the Youngs Sportsplex, BC’s women’s soccer team fell to Quebec 2-0 in their second meetup after a 1-1 tie in their first game. They will next play Team Manitoba on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. for a chance to play in the fifth place game.

Softball
Nate Thiessen (Surrey) was the story of the diamond on Thursday at Southward Community Park at the Canada Games, throwing a no-hitter against Alberta to push BC to a 4-2 record. His 14 strikeout performance was his second complete game shutout of the day, after a 12 K victory against New Brunswick.
Derian Potskin (Prince George) hit his third home run of the tournament in the first game, while Ethan Lans (Chase) picked up two hits and a run batted in. Against Alberta, Isaac Brown (Surrey) had 2 hits and Luka Kim (Prince George) drove in a pair.
Team BC will wrap up the preliminary round on Friday with games against Saskatchewan at 10 a.m. and Quebec at 4:30 p.m.

Volleyball
BC’s men’s volleyball team finished third in their preliminary pool, after falling to Team Alberta 3 sets to none at Canada Games Park. They will play Quebec in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2 p.m.
On the women’s side, Team BC finished second in their pool, after dropping their match against Alberta 3-0. The team will also face Quebec in the quarterfinal match on Friday at noon.
