Table Tennis team poses with medals at 2023 Canada Winter Games.

Coach Conversation: Bronze is golden for Team BC table tennis in PEI

Coming into the 2023 Canada Winter Games, members of the BC table tennis team were seeded lower than the more experienced athletes from other provinces. But that didn’t intimidate the BC players says Coach Wei Jianren (Richmond).

“Their spirit and attitude is definitely to be respected,” he says. ”Even though we were going up against teams like Quebec, who were ranked higher than us, we weren’t scared because we knew that we were prepared.”

Team BC won bronze medals in five table tennis events, meaning each athlete received at least one medal.

“I think this time we’ve definitely accomplished our goals. However, we knew that we needed to set our targets high, aim to get the best result that we could, and continuing fighting until the very last match,” adds the coach.*

Team manager Ivy Liao (Vancouver), who won two table tennis silver medals and one bronze at the Prince George 2015 Canada Winter Games, is thrilled with the Team BC’s in Charlottetown.

“It was amazing supporting them in their journey, and watching them grow and seeing all of their hard work pay off,” she says. “They continued to exceed expectations throughout the week. I’m very proud of them. Bronze is the new gold!”
