5 medals for Team BC Golf in individual competition

Team BC had a nearly flawless day at the Fort McMurray Golf Club, with the women sweeping the podium and men taking gold and silver medals for the individual competitions.

Hannah Lee, Tiffany Kong, and Alisha Lau took first, second and third respectively for the women’s individual competition, with teammate Shirin Anjarwalla following closely behind in sixth place. Lee shot a 73 today for a total of 212, five points off the leader.

“It feels great to win gold, especially representing British Columbia,” said Lee. Coming into this tournament, Lee says, “I knew B.C. was strong so I was obviously going for the team gold medal, and I just wanted to bring two medals home and do my best. I’m just so happy that I got gold today.”

On the men’s side, first place finisher A.J. Ewart shot a 72 today to end up with 217 total. His teammate Tristan Mandur shared the podium in second placel, and teammates Khan Lee and Keenan Flemming came fifth and ninth respectively.

Head coach Matt Palsenbarg says he’s very happy with how the team played throughout the tournament. “It was a great event, and the kids had fun. That’s what matters most.”  Team BC also took home gold yesterday for the team competition, with Hannah Lee, Kong, and Lau combining for the women’s gold and Ewart, Mandur, and Khan Lee contributing to the men’s.

All of the players raved about their Western Canada Summer Games experience. Lee, who has never played a multi-sport games before, says she enjoyed it because: “We got experience we would never be able to get in other tournaments. We got to watch other Team BC kids and other sports.”

She’s right – for a quiet sport with a small team, the Team BC golfers were one of the most spirited teams at the venues. They won the #WeareBC spirit award and were often spotted cheering on their Team BC athletes at as many venues as their competition schedule allowed.
