Medal guaranteed for Team BC in squash

Team BC squash had a big day yesterday as they competed in both team pool play and the individual bracket play. Michele Garceau (Surrey), Gavin Maxwell (Victoria) and Matthew Toth (Richmond) each had exciting matches, propelling them into the semi-finals of the individual competition.
Garceau lead early in the match, two games to love, but Team PEI’s Quincy Beck fought back to force the match into a fifth game. “In the last game, I refocused and valued every point to push for the win,” said Garceau.
Maxwell beat his higher-seeded opponent without giving up a game. “I was feeling really confident and energized going into my match. By the second game, I had settled into the rhythm of the match and pushed through to win in three,” said Maxwell.
Toth took on the second overall seed of the male individual competition, an opponent he has faced many times over the years but had never beaten. “My shots were the best they have ever been, and I kept my focus throughout the match even when it wasn’t going my way,” said Toth. “I really feel like this win will give the whole team a boost going into the team competition.”
With two men in the semi-finals being played today, Team BC is guaranteed to medal on Wednesday, February 25.
In the team competition, the women competed in two encounters and finished with wins against Team Newfoundland (4-0) and Team Quebec (3-1). The men came out with a win against Team Yukon (4-0). Up next, the women play Team New Brunswick, and the men play Team Manitoba and Team PEI as the round robin portion of the team competition continues.
