Team BC duo selected to represent Canada at the Youth Olympics

Two junior curlers from BC have been picked to be part of Team Canada at the 2016 Youth Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

Tyler Tardi, from Surrey, and Sterling Middleton, who lives in Fort St. John, make up half of the Canadian curling team that will compete at the prestigious international event.

Both curlers represented Team BC earlier this year when they won bronze at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George where Tyler skipped the Men’s team and Sterling played third.

Speaking about the news, Tardi said: “I’m at a loss for words, it’s amazing. I’ve always wanted to wear the Maple Leaf and that dream has now come true.”

Middleton was equally excited, he said: “It’s an honour to be picked. I’m really happy because it was my goal for this year. So many people wanted to be chosen so it’s pretty special to make the team.

“I’m really looking forward to being on the team with Tyler as I think we meshed well together this year, so it will be great to curl with him again.”

The pair, who are both 16 years old, will be joined by Mary Fay and Karlee Burgess from Nova Scotia who were part of the team that took the Women’s silver at the Canada Winter Games.

Applications for the team were accepted from all Canadian players born between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2001. As well as judging the applicants on their curling skill, the selection panel considered community leadership and academic experience.

BC was also represented at the 2012 Youth Olympics when Corryn Brown (Team BC 2011 Canada Winter Games), from Kamloops, played third on the Canadian team that won bronze.

The 2016 Youth Olympics will take place in Lillehammer from February 12 – 21, 2016
