Advice from Team BC’s Medical Manager

All your hard work and preparation will be for naught if you can’t stay healthy during the Games.   In order to help our athletes stay in peak condition and achieve their optimal performances, the Team BC Medical Manager is on site here in Wood Buffalo.  Team BC is fortunate to have Ashley Reece as our Team BC Medical Manager, a Certified Athletic Therapist and a Registered Holistic Nutritionist.  Ashley supports the team in numerous ways – Here is a quick reference to her role during the Games, so you know when to call on her:

* Liaison between the athletes, coaches and support staff and the host medical services.
* Guide athletes and coaches through the use of Games medical services.
* Assist coaches and support staff with athlete care, allowing coaches to remain focused on coaching tasks.
* Support athletes and coaches during potential injuries, giving guidance, education and recommendations.

Here are some great tips from Ashley on staying healthy during the games:

1. Eat Well! Make smart food choices that will help to fuel your performance and recovery. Don’t stray from your regular routine. Remember that carbohydrates provide our main energy source and proteins facilitate recovery. Avoid excess refined sugars to limit fluctuations in blood sugar levels.

2. Stay Hydrated. Ensure that you are drinking adequate amounts of water throughout the games. Always keep a water bottle with you. After competition, aim to replenish with water or sports drinks. You should aim to drink 500-600 ml of fluids within 1-2 hours after competition.

3. Get the rest you need. The games can be exciting, and exhausting. Focus on sleep and taking downtime to restore your energy and allow you to be at your best.

4. Avoid illness. Always wash your hands. Carry hand sanitizer with you at all times. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid other sick athletes. Protect yourself from potential illness!

5. Limit sun exposure. When you aren’t competing, be mindful of time spent in direct sunlight. Wear sunscreen, wear your Team BC hat, and look for shade.
