Strong results for Team BC on day one of athletics
It was a busy first day of athletics at the University of Manitoba with some great results for Team BC. Rori Denness-Lamont placed fourth in the women’s javelin final with a throw of 40.78m.
Jerome Blake of Kelowna ran the fastest times in the men’s 100m dash with Benjamin Tjernagel (New Westminster) right behind with the fifth fastest time. Both advance to the A Final.
Other notable finishes for Team BC include:
- Valda Kabia (Surrey) and Katherine Lucas (Vancouver) advanced in women’s 100m dash.
- Women’s hammer throwers Kalia Butler (Port Coquitlam) and Chanell Botsis (Coquitlam) advanced to A Finals.
- Micheal Aono (Delta) advances to the A Final in Men’s 400m dash.
- Women’s 400m: Lauren D’Agnolo (Victoria) advances to A Final; Sophie Dodd (Vancouver) advances to B Final.
- Women’s long jump: both Diana Voloshin (Vancouver) and Kristen Schulz (North Vancouver) advance to the A Final
- Women’s 400m hurdles – Megan Champoux (Aldergrove) placed first in preliminaries; she and Sophie Dodd (Vancouver) advance to the A Final.
- Men’s 400m hurdles: Jake Hanna (Surrey) advances to the A Final.
- Men’s 4x100m relay: Team of Nathan Mah (Burnaby), Benjamin Tjernagel (New Westminster), Michael Aono ( Delta) and Jerome Blake (Kelowna) ran the fastest time in preliminaries and advance to the A Final.
- Women’s 4x100m relay: Team of Katherine Lucas (Vancouver), Valda Kabia (Surrey), Jasneet Nijjar (Surrey) and Diana Voloshin (Vancouver) advance to the A Final

On her fourth place finish
“Today’s competition really could have gone one way or the other. I’m relatively very young compared to my competitors. I did well and I’m super happy with my performance. A couple small corrections and I could be on the podium in the next Canada Games. Now I’m done my competition, I’m excited to go cheer on the other Team BC athletes like beach volleyball and baseball.”
