Gold and silver for Team BC on final day of swimming

Team BC added two more medals Saturday morning in the final swimming events of the 2017 Summer Games in Winnipeg.

North Vancouver’s Raben Dommann took gold in the men’s 5,000m race in a time of 56:54.82. The event was moved to the Pan Am Pool when Games officials determined the lake at Birds Hill Provincial Park was not fit for open water swimming. Racers had to swim 100 laps of the 50-metre pool.

“I was disappointed that the race wasn’t held at the lake,” said Dommann, “I got off to a good start, kept my pace throughout and had a strong finish to win gold.”

Sehajvir Singh (New Westminster) was eighth in the 5,000m race.

Acacia Benn (Penticton) added her fifth medal Saturday taking silver in the women’s 5,000m race in a time of 1:01:31.

“I was bummed that the race was moved from the lake to the pool as I like using everyone to draft during the race,” said Benn.  “I just went for it today and I am pleased with my silver medal result.”

Zoe Froh of Burnaby was seventh in the 5,000m race.

Team BC concludes the 2017 Canada Games swimming competition with 52 medals.
