Daily Recap – August 12, 2022

Team BC captured multiple medals, including a historic silver in box lacrosse, a gold medal in triathlon, and hardware at the 3000m Open Water Swim along with other strong performances. More medal opporunities await tomorrow.

Day 7 Highlights:

• Softball captured their 5th consecutive gold medal, this time on a walk-off homerun against Quebec
• BC’s mixed triathlon team featuring Sidney Clement (West Vancouver), Daniel Damian (Victoria), Trevor Laupland (Kamloops), and Colette Reimer (Victoria) secured Team BC’s third gold medal in triathlon at these Canada Summer Games.
• Men’s basketball emerged victorious in the battle of the west, defeating Alberta 98-74 in the semifinal game. They have earned a spot in the gold medal game on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. where they will face Team Ontario
• BC’s mixed tennis team earned a spot in the Gold medal tie after a hard fought semi-final victory tie against Ontario

Baseball

The BC men’s baseball team lost to Alberta 4-0 in their semifinal game today. They will play in the bronze medal game against Saskatchewan on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Basketball

Team BC’s women’s basketball won their consolation game versus Manitoba 71-68.

The team was down four points going into the third quarter, but went on a 8-0 run to take the lead. Lauren Rust (Victoria) then hit two clutch free-throws to seal the game for BC. Julia Tuchscherer (Chilliwack) had a team high of 15 points.

They will play for a shot at fifth place against Nova Scotia on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

On the men’s side, BC emerged victorious in the battle of the west, defeating Alberta 98-74 in the semifinal game. They have earned a spot in the gold medal game on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. where they will face Team Ontario.

“It was a great game for us offensively, as well on the defensive end”, said coach Paul Eberhardt. “We knew Alberta was going to come out hard in this rematch, but our boys showed real mental fortitude and we executed our game plan. Now it's time to focus on the final.”

Box Lacrosse

BC’s women’s box lacrosse team brought home the silver medal today after losing against Ontario 2-1 in the gold medal game. Elora Waardenburg (Cobble Hill) scored the lone goal for Team BC early in the third period to tie the game at one. Ontario would add another goal midway through the period to give the host team the gold medal. 

“We got better every single game,” said Ashley Bull, Team BC Head Coach. “It was a tough outcome but the main point of these Games was to get lacrosse back on the main stage and I’m so proud we were able to do that.”

Cycling

Noah Rubuliak (Kelowna) won another bronze medal for BC, after finishing third with a time of 3:14.030 in the men’s mountain bike sprint event. Rubuliak finished first in his quarterfinal heat earlier today with a time of 3:18.920 to earn a spot in the semifinals. He placed second in the semifinals with a time of 3:13.100 to secure a spot in the medal heat.

Soccer

The BC men’s soccer team won their fifth place game against Saskatchewan 5-1. Brandon Momotani (Burnaby), James Cameron (North Vancouver), Mateo Brazinha (Port Coquitlam), and Kyle Dent (North Vancouver) all scored for Team BC, with Cameron scoring two goals in this afternoon’s game.

Softball

The women’s softball team for BC shutout Team Quebec 10-0 in four innings to bring home the gold medal for Team BC. Morgan Reimer (Langley) struck out six batters on her way to another shutout performance on the mound, while Abby McGlynn hit a game-ending home run to send BC to victory.

“I’m so proud of us for pushing through and knowing we could do this the whole time,” said Reimer.

Swimming

The BC swimming team took home two more medals for Team BC. Aidan Erickson (Langley) won the silver medal in the men’s 3000m open water event after finishing with a time of 35.37. Julia Strojnowska (Vancouver) is the bronze medallist in the women’s event after finishing with a time of 37.43.

Tennis

BC’s mixed tennis team earned a spot in the Gold medal tie after a hard fought semi-final victory tie against Ontario 4 matches to 2 late under the lights at Niagara on the Lake Tennis Club.

"We beat them (Ontario) in round robin play so it was having that belief in the big points, your teammates and going for your shot,” said Graeme Kassautzki, Team BC Tennis Coach.

With the victory, they will play Quebec on Saturday at 3 p.m. Eastern for Gold.

Triathlon

BC’s mixed triathlon team featuring Sidney Clement (West Vancouver), Daniel Damian (Victoria), Trevor Laupland (Kamloops), and Colette Reimer (Victoria) secured Team BC’s third gold medal in triathlon at these Canada Summer Games. The team finished the mixed team relay event with a time of 1:38:45, almost a minute and a half faster than the second place team.

Reimer has now won three gold medals at these Games, after winning gold in the women’s triathlon sprint and the supersprint events earlier this week.

Volleyball

Luke de Greeff (Victoria) and Dan Everton (Penticton) of the BC men’s beach volleyball team have won 10 consecutive sets at these Canada Summer Games after another straight set victory over Quebec today in the semifinals. They will look to extend their five-match winning streak and take the gold medal against Ontario on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

“This match felt great. It’s the best team we played and we handled the pressure well and came through,” said Everton.

On the women’s side, Julia Soeller (Vancouver) and Sara Ostojic (Vancouver) lost their semifinal match against Ontario 2 sets to 1, after winning their first set 21-19. They will play for the bronze medal versus New Brunswick on Saturday at 3 p.m.
