Avalon Wasteneys and Canadian women’s eight deliver silver in Paris
Avalon Wasteneys and the Canadian women’s eight delivered a silver medal in a thrilling final at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Wasteneys won triple gold with Team BC rowing at the Winnipeg 2017 Canada Summer Games. Before she was an outstanding rower, Wasteneys was a cross country skiier and competed in the sport at the 2012 BC Winter Games.
The silver medal capped off an impressive Olympic performance for the women’s eight. The team was forced to compete in the repechage after finishing fifth out of seven nations but took the challenge to heart, improving their heat time by 16.5 seconds to earn a spot in the final.
In the final, Canada led after 500 metres and continued to battle after being passed by Romania, holding off a late charge from a Great Britain team whose heat time was five seconds faster than their own to come away with silver.
